VIJAYAWADA: In an effort to bring down traffic irregularities, Road Transport Authority (RTA) with the support of police have decided to conduct an enforcement drive across the State from December 1 to seize vehicles that do not have a permanent registration number within a month of purchase.According to RTA officials, the police department had recently convened a meeting with transport commissioner N Balasubramaniam and told him about their difficulties in identifying the details of the vehicles, involved in accidents or crime incidents.
Taking their plea into consideration, the transport commissioner instructed the officials concerned to speed up the vehicle registration procedure by auctioning the fancy numbers across the 13 districts of the State.
Around one lakh vehicles in the State ply on the road without a permanent registration number in which Anantapur district stood top among the list with around 18,700 vehicles and Visakhapatnam with 5,285 vehicles, sources said.
Speaking to TNIE on Wednesday, Joint Transport Commissioner (JTC) SAV Prasada Rao said as per the Motor Vehicle Act, a vehicle owner should get the permanent registration within one month of the purchase and if they failed to do so, penalty of Rs 300 would be levied.
“It’s a routine affair for the department to conduct to surprise checks and penalise violators. But this time, the checks will be conducted strictly and vehicles will be seized on the spot if the vehicle owner fails to get a permanent registration number before November 30,” Rao said.
He added that if a two-wheeler owner fails to register his vehicle even after one year of purchasing, he/she should have to pay a penalty of Rs 3,600.
