VIJAYAWADA: The Krishna district administration is planning to launch mobile libraries, a first-of-its-kind initiative, to promote reading habit among students of government schools.

As part of the initiative, the mobile libraries will visit each government school for an hour. Students can borrow books from the mobile libraries. There are over 2,700 government schools in the district. Majority of the schools do not have libraries. Hence, the district administration has come up with the idea of introducing mobile libraries.

“The initiative to launch mobile libraries will certainly benefit students and help promote reading habit among them in a big way,” said N Nancharaiah, principal of a government school in Vijayawada.

Explaining the idea, District Collector B Lakshmikantham said, “We have this proposal for quite a long time. This is the right time to implement it. We are trying to rope in NGOs or partner with district libraries for its successful implementation. Currently, we are discussing the proposal with the officials concerned and it will be implemented soon.”

With the introduction of mobile libraries, students can read their favourite books and spend their leisure in a productive manner which enables them to improve their knowledge. It is learnt that a book reader will accompany each mobile library, who explains the summary of a book to the students of up to the seventh standard.
