Sukalyan Das, Sarit Parida, Anil Kumar, Sambit Ghadai, Yashaswi Agrawalla and Vishnu Kunchur have been rocking Rourkela with their band Euphony for quite some time now. Not only can they sing, they also write songs and juggle music with studies.
While Das completed his engineering from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, (NIT-R) this month, the other five are students of various streams of engineering like mining, industrial, biomedical, mechanical and metallurgy. Das continues to be a part of Euphony as a vocalist and manager. The band has Parida as lead guitarist, Kumar on bass and as sound manager, Ghadai as rhythm guitarist, Agrawalla on drums and percussion and Kunchur as the vocalist and on synth.
While the band was set-up in 1999, the present line-up of Euphony has been playing together for almost two years now.
“The concept of Euphony is different from other bands in the State. Annual inductions are held wherein new members are inducted into the band year after year, and the legacy is thus carried forth. The band was formed by a group of students in 1999, who had a common interest — music. Euphony's intention was never to glue together. Rather, the inspiration has been to develop a taste and greater understanding of music and human emotions,” says drummer Agrawalla.
Das brought the present line-up together in 2010. The band has played at IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Kanpur, KIIT-Bhubaneswar and VSSUT-Burla in the last two years. This apart, they have done shows for 92.7 Big FM, performed in clubs and are a regular in the NIT-R music circuit.
They have composed official theme songs — Destiny and Back to Childhood — for the cultural fests of NIT-R — NITRUTSAV 2010 and 2012 respectively. “Besides, there is another original, Mere Khuda, which is still under production. We have composed several other songs including instrumentals and plan to put them all in an album under the name of Euphony soon,” Agrawalla adds.
The band members say language has never been a barrier for them. Euphony’s compositions have been in Hindi, English and even Tamil ■
