Concentration can be developed by practice and perseverance and is definitely within reach. Let us look at some ways to develop it.
SUFFICIENT REST: Adequate rest and proper sleep ensures good focus. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7 - 9 hours of sleep a night. We should understand our bodily needs and the minimum amount of sleep required so that we do not indulge in oversleeping. Oversleeping disturbs the biological rhythm of the body, leading to laziness.
EAT PROPERLY: According to the American Dietetic Association, skipping breakfast and/or regular meals affects concentration. Balanced meals with adequately composed nutrients including proteins, whole grains, vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates maintain the metabolic rate, thus enabling smooth energy supply to the brain. Eating small portions in frequent intervals works wonders. However, one must stay away from overeating, which can lead to digestion issues.
REGULAR EXERCISE: Regular exercise can dramatically improve concentration, memory and efficiency. Therefore, setting aside at least half an hour for walking, jogging or any other physical exercise is advisable for good concentration. In case of time constraints, the physical activity can be split into various smaller exercise bouts throughout the day.
MEDITATION: The practice of meditation on a daily basis not only improves concentration but also restores the normal bodily functions of the body. While meditating, sit in a comfortable position, shut your eyes and watch your breathing pattern. This helps to focus on one thing at a time. The breathing exercise leads our body and mind to a peaceful state of existence.
PLAN FOR THE DAY: Before beginning the day’s work, chart out a schedule for the day, ensuring proper time management. Not following a time-bound schedule leads to distractions such as checking mails frequently, browsing the net, chatting and so on. Once we deviate from the subject, concentration takes a backseat and we tend to grow lethargic. Thus, chalking out a strategy beforehand would be helpful.
CHOOSE A RIGHT PLACE: While taking up a task requiring utmost concentration, choose a serene place devoid of distractions. Suggested venues like the library, study lounges and private rooms are the best for maintaining focus, as they assure solitude and silence. Crowded places give more scope for distraction.
MINIMISE DISTRACTIONS: Distraction from some external source including noises, some form of odour, visual elements, gadgets, cell phone and web browsing must be avoided or kept to the minimal. The best way to deal with this is to exercise self-discipline. Several ways to achieve this, include adjusting the seating position, using ear plugs, switching off the cell phone, shutting the door. One should also keep mental distractions at bay, in order to complete the task at hand.
ATTITUDE MATTERS: A calm poised attitude with a cool mind helps to concentrate. It keeps stress away and provides the brain with a relaxed ambience to work efficiently.
