Making the best use of technology, SuperProfs Founder Piyush Agarwal is easing out coaching in tier-two cities.

Piyush Agarwal’s idea of pursuing a PhD was to use technology for the betterment of society. That’s what brought him back to India from Stanford University. In 2010, he founded SuperProfs, a platform for coaching students for UPSC, CA etc. After three years of experimenting with the concept, Piyush came up with an online teaching platform that helps students from small cities to get first-hand knowledge about their subjects. Excerpts...  What was the reason behind starting SuperProfs?

Students in tier two and three cities do not get the benefits that the government provides to build their academic skills. The entrance exams, on the other hand, are specialised. The only option is relocation to cities like Chennai and Delhi, which not everyone can afford. That’s why we decided to create the platform. We used the technology to convert these classrooms into online platforms.

How do you manage to extend real-time doubt clearing?

We arrange live webinars during which professors clear doubts on a one-on-one basis. Another method is to clear the doubts on a clarification app. Students can write their doubts on paper. In addition, we have teaching assistants to these professors.

How is the software optimised to allow low data signal browsing?

That was the biggest challenge because basic connectivity is a problem. We developed a proprietary technology that enables HD videos to run on low internet speed.

How much of a difference does the merit of a professor make when it comes to online teaching?

Although the questions are MCQ they do need deep understanding. We only hire teachers with an experience of 5 to 10 years. Also, before onboarding a professor, we carry out a survey among his students to find out the popularity of the professor among the students.

What quantum of your students are working side by side?

Unlike IIT and medical programs, students pursuing UPSC are either working or studying in a college. As challenging as it is, online courses can help them manage their time better. Students do not waste time in commuting and can study whenever they want.
