So what if NID is out of reach? KSID is a brilliant alternative that is just as good and has a great campus, says Dileep V Kumar

In India, the first choice for people wanting to study design is the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad. But seats are limited and only a handful of candidates are able to get in.

It’s said that a good number of students from Kerala, each year, apply to NID but only some of them managed to get in. But for those who didn’t, the Kerala State Institute of Design (KSID), established by the Government of Kerala under the Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence, is a nifty alternative.
The institute, which is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of city life is at Chandanathope in Kollam. Sprawled across 31,000 square feet, the campus stands out for its serene atmosphere as well as the green canopy.

The institute which aims to create a vibrant design community in Kerala is ably supported by NID, Ahmedabad as the pioneer institute of design in the country has created a comprehensive roadmap for KSID. According to KSID officials, it was NID which help in its faculty development programme as well as developing a curriculum for design programmes. KSID which offers Post Graduate courses in design in the fields of Product Design, Communication Design and Textile Design, came into existence as a result of the idea mooted by the former State Planning Board chairman Prabhat Patnaik.
KSID which offers a five semester programme with a total duration of two and a half academic years is gearing up to welcome its third batch of students as it has invited applications for its PG programmes for the year 2017.
