BHOPAL: After 13 years in power in Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan resigned as chief minister on Wednesday. The 59-year-old leader took responsibility for the party’s failure to return to power in the state for a fourth straight term.

“We didn’t get the expected results, which is my fault and hence I take the responsibility for it. Though we got marginally more votes than the Congress, it’s the number of seats which count in electoral democracy, where Congress outnumbered us. Since we didn’t have the numbers, I decided not to stake a claim for forming next government and subsequently quit from my post,” said Chouhan.

Ruling out moving to national politics after the debacle, the CM said, “Meri atma Madhya Pradesh mein basti hai (my heart and soul resides in MP only).”Keeping people guessing about his future move, Chouhan said the leader of Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha would be decided by the party.

“Our next step is to prepare for the grand success in Lok Sabha polls and work to ensure that our government led by PM Narendra Modi gets another term in power at the Centre with grand success in the 2019 polls,” said Chouhan. He also said the change of guard should not affect the public welfare schemes initiated by him.
