Actor Arya, on singing

I tried singing 2 lines, and Yuvan Shankar Raja asked me to stop right there. He requested that I never sing in my life.

Not afraid to experiment, Arya has given us a vivid selection of movies, be it the grim ‘Naan Kadavul’, the period film, ‘Madrasapattinam’, and the crazy ‘Boss Engira Bhaskaran’. Now the actor is ready to throw some action into the mix, courtesy Selvaraghavan’s next project, ‘Irandam Ulagam’, also starring Anushka Shetty.

Incidentally, there are reports that the 32-year-old might be a part of Venkat Prabhu’s next movie, which will also star Vishal, Jiva and Jayam Ravi.

First up

From the actor’s recent interviews, it is evident that he has enjoyed filming ‘Vettai’, also starring Madhavan, Sameera Reddy and Amala Paul. “Making fun of each other and playing pranks was something that was inevitable on the sets of ‘Vettai’. The best part was I would play cards with Maddy every day after the shoot. I always used to win and Maddy would lose and all he would say is, ‘I might not be lucky with a pack of cards but I am lucky with love.’ I think it is the opposite with me,” says Arya about working on the film scheduled to launch next week.

Break a sweat

Going by his physique, it’s a given that the actor enjoys physical activity. He confirms this, saying he works out at least four days a week, but is a big fan of outdoor games. “I am not a gym freak and I believe when one plays a game, you get inspired and it helps keep you fit. I personally love football and whenever I get an opportunity, I play it,” reveals the self-confessed technophobe.

A director’s actor

Arya finds inspiration in everyone. “I think the greatest inspiration for me were the physically challenged people who worked with me in ‘Naan Kadavul’. They are so ambitious and they know exactly what they want,” he recalls.

Behind the scenes

While the ‘Pappa pappa’ song from ‘Vettai’ has created a buzz, Arya had attempted to sing it. “I tried singing two lines, and Yuvan Shankar Raja asked me to stop right there. He requested that I never sing in my life. I am so bad at it, people cannot stand it,” chuckles Arya, who admits that Vishal in ‘Avan Ivan’ and Vikram in ‘Deiva Thirumagan’ are some of the most difficult characters to play. A fan of multi-starrers ‘Vettai’ and ‘Avan Ivan’ being examples — Arya looks forward to such projects. “We do not have ego fights when we work together in a movie. It is not like we are having a race here. A person becomes an actor because of a certain caliber that he has, so everyone in that way is unique,” says Arya.

Incidentally, his younger sibling, Sathya, will be in a movie soon and he is waiting to analyze it. “My brother has been a great critic for all my movies, now it is time for me to have a look at what he has done and I shall give him my comments,” he offers.

Favourite food: 601 at The Park and my mom makes awesome biryani.

Style factor: Semi formals. I love brands from China and Bangkok (all the fake ones, basically). I think we should wear what suits us and what we are comfortable in.

No gadgets, please: I hate networking sites simply because it is time consuming and I hate to sit there and tell the world what I am doing. I have one phone and I find it a task to manage it. I check my mail once a month and hardly speak to people over the phone.

Music I listen to: Whatever is on the radio. And no, I do not have an iPod.

My positives: I am a very friendly person. I resemble the character of Boss (in ‘Boss Engira Bhaskaran’). I am jovial and can get along with everyone.

My negatives: I can judge people soon and become cold once I find out something I dislike about them. I can never be diplomatic, which can be both a good and bad thing.

A romantic? : I think I am just about fine at it.
