ThamanS or Sai, as he is known by friends, grew very emotional at the audio launch of his first release, 'Sinthanei Sei'. For him turning music director from hero and drummer is a thirteen-year-old dream that finally came true. “Technically it’s my fourth film but the other three haven’t released yet,” says Thaman. “My first break came with Aascar Film’s 'Moscovin Kaveri'. Later I signed 'Eerum', a Shankar production directed by Arivazhagu and later I got 'Aridu Aridu'.” Thaman tells us about the Shankar connection and how the Boys hero turned to music. “ I was always interested in music since my father was the late drummer, Sivakumar, and my mother is a playback singer of the 70’s.

Shankar sir knew about this interest and heard some of my jingles ( for 65 ads to date including Arun Ice-cream, Pothys, Chennai Silks etc). He offered me 'Kadhal' and later 'Kalloori' but things didn’t work out. So I am doubly happy to be doing S Pictures 'Eerum' now,” says Thaman about his mentor.

Thaman was a drummer in Venkat Prabhu’s band Next Generation, along with SP Charan and Yugendran. Later he worked with music director Mani Sharma for six years on rhythms and keyboard before his dream of turning music director came true.

'Sinthanei Sei' has five songs and a title track that has been sung by Thaman. “Each song is different and trendy and totally unpredictable. It doesn’t follow any structure and is in keeping with the mood and requirement of the film,” says Thaman.

Judging by the way the dignitaries at the function were tapping their feet throughout, Thaman’s music could be the next chart-topper in Kollywood.
