On Thursday, Prime Video confirmed that the season 2 for the Vijay Varma starrer series Matka King is in development. The show premiered with Season 1 on April 17.
Matka King S1 was directed by Fandry (2013) and Sairat (2016) director Nagraj Popatrao Manjule. It followed the rags-to-riches rise of Brij Bhatti (Vijay Varma), a middle-class common trader who takes a gambling game and turns it into something that gets the entire city, and eventually the nation, hooked and addicted, while navigating law and order.
Matka King premiered to mixed reviews from critics and audience. In our review, we noted, “Busy with its expository segments, Matka King inadvertently refuses to raise the emotional stakes by digging deeper into the characters. The tension doesn’t build even in the most volatile segments of the narrative.” however, the series found praise from industry folks like Karan Johar and Aamir Khan.
Season 2 will have Vijay Varma and Kritika Kamra reprise their roles. However, the streamer did not confirm whether the Sairat filmmaker will return as the co-creator and director for season 2. Any confirmation about other lead cast members, like Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav and Gulshan Grover among others, returning in season 2 is yet to be made as well.
