Controversies related to movies are cropping up day by day and the latest victim is the Kannada film Mynaa, which is facing the music for having C Aswath’s song Kaanada kadalige hambaliside mana as their background music, copyrights of which is with Velu of Lahari Audio company.
Apparently Velu is asking the team of Mynaa to pay royalty for the song, which has been used without permission. Director of the film, Nagashekar is shocked over the developments.
He said, “I have personally taken permission from the National award winner Chi Shivarudrappa and his family and C Ashwath’s wife who has respected my work and have agreed the use of the song in the film. In fact I have dedicated this film to C Ashwath. For that matter, Shivarudrappa personally told me that his grand daughter liked a song in Sanju Weds Geetha and was happy that I am using a good number for Mynaa. I was shocked to learn that Velu of Lahiri is asking Rs 25 lakhs royalty for using the song without their permission.”
According to the director, he had made a request to use the song 2 years ago, which they were okay with.
"Now all of a sudden, they are talking business. Producer Rockline put in a word to Lahiri Velu and he has now come down to Rs 5 lakhs for using the song.
I am not making any profit by using the song as it is not even added in the audio CDs nor mobile downloads,” he said. But Velu states that he had obtained the copyright of the 20-year-old song and the users have to pay royalty.
“Legally it is not right to use the music for the background score too. We will not allow it to happen,” he said.
Velu is upset that they are just taking permission to use the song but have not come down to business and settle the issue.
“If he thinks that he is paying tribute by using this song, what does he have to tell about having ownership of 300 songs of C Ashwath. They are not acting as professionals and just beating around the bush by making people to call me to use the music,” he asserted.
To this controversy, the producer of Mynaa, Vajreshwari Kumar stated, “We had taken permission to use the pallavi of the song but because Velu is creating an issue, we will not be using it now and have found an alternative.”
