Beating Around the Bush with a Convoluted Plot

With a screenplay that is loosely etched, incidents lacking any depth and jumpy narration, there are hardly any scenes to keep you hooked.

Malini Mannath

Film Yasakhan

Director Duraivanan

Cast Mahesh, Niranjana, Janavi, Jaychandran

Yasakhan is about a do-gooder and his experiences, as he encounters the hypocrisy and selfishness of society and near and dear ones. The director has tried to convey a relevant message on human behaviour and mindset. But, the lack of skill and expertise to translate his ideas on screen makes it devoid of clarity and conviction.

Mahesh (of Angadi Theru fame) plays Surya, a Good Samaritan to his neighbours and the biggest bane of his father’s life. The actor, who was impressive in his debut film, is more like a zombie here, managing minimum expression.

However, the women in the film seem a spirited lot. Like Shalini (debutant Niranjana) Surya’s new neighbour who tries to woo him tirelessly, from the moment she sets her eyes on him. The role of his elder sister Sharadha (Janavi), who is seen frequently taking lifts from a stranger, offers a lot of scope for exploration. But, even that falls flat as the story progresses.

Possibly, the only well-treated moment in the flick is when a man tells Sharadha why he wouldn’t prefer to marry her.

The music is a cold affair and hardly strikes a chord. The ending is convoluted, with a long preachy message. The director, who assisted Amir and Sashikumar, seems to have wanted to make a meaningful and socially relevant film. But, it’s a case of good intentions gone awry.
