Two days after Thalaivaa failed to hit the screens, actor Vijay sought the assistance of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in getting the film released at the earliest.
In an official press statement, seeking the CM’s intervention, Vijay said, “I request the chief minister, who has helped so many others, to intervene in the problems that Thalaivaa is facing and help us to get the film released across Tamil Nadu at the very earliest.” Thalaivaa was slated for release last Friday but was yanked out of theatres after disagreements cropped up between the distributors and the theatre owners.
A bomb threat, issues with the tax waiver certificate and a lawsuit, besides the purportedly ‘political’ nature of the film had all played a role in its delay. It released in all other parts of India and abroad and has been doing well. Industry trackers have estimated that the film netted close to Rs 80 lakh in the opening weekend in the UK alone, which is quite an achievement for a non-Bollywood film.
Vijay went on to say how much regard he had for the Chief Minister and the way in which she has handled governance. “I have always admired the way the chief minister has governed the State.
She has a transparent style of functioning that is aimed at making Tamil Nadu the most progressive State in the country. She has granted free power, welfare schemes, laptops for students and has taken strong stands in issues like the NLC crisis. I have always admired her administration and it is clear that her government is of the highest calibre.”
