What does 'Theri' Mean?

The release of the teaser for Vijay's 59th movie Their has set the internet abuzz. Within hours of its release, the teaser toted up 2.5 lakh views on YouTube.

In the time-honoured tradition of Tamil cinema, the title of the Atlee-directed film is a colloquial one, meant to intrigue and attract the youth. But does it mean?

The film stars, besides Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay, Samantha and Amy Jackson, but discussion it has triggered is not about the stars' chemistry but the meaning of 'Theri'.

The word 'their' does not exist in Tamil, and fans are not sure what the producers want to convey. Metaphorically, the meaning might be rendered as 'splash'.

There are many other Tamil movies like 'Ka Ka Ka Po', 'Thaaru Maaru', 'Gethu',  'Jil Jung Jak' where the titles have no meaning at all.

But the lack of a meaning itself may be a marketing technique.
