Decks cleared for Ravi Shankaran extradition

The CBI on Tuesday said that the UK had cleared the extradition of Naval war room leak accused Ravi Shankaran. In March, a UK court had ruled in favour of Shankaran’s extradition to India.

And Home Secretary Theresa had last week issued orders regarding Shankaran’s extradition to India but he has been given 14 days to appeal. It may be recalled that in March, the CBI had said that the agency would not oppose the bail plea of Shankaran once he is back in the country. The investigating agency had also given an undertaking in the London court in this regard. After ruling in favour of Shankaran’s extradition in March, the Extradition Court in London had sent Shankaran’s case to the Secretary of State (SoS) to order his extradition, which has allowed it. The CBI may soon send a team to the UK to bring the former Navy officer back.

It may be recalled that Shankaran, a retired Naval Commander and relative of former Navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash, had left India in 2006 before the CBI started investigations in the Naval war room leak case. The Interpol had issued a red-corner notice against him in 2006 on CBI’s request.
