War honour to V K Krishna Menon

Express News Service

Former Defence Minister V K Krishna Menon has been awarded posthumous Friends of Liberation War Honour by the Bangladesh Government.

The award was received by the legendary leader’s grand niece Radha Anand Menon from Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Abdul Hamid at a ceremony held at Bangabandhu International Convention Centre in Dhaka on Tuesday (October 1).

It may be recalled that repeated appeals by Menon to the Government of India for taking military action against the Pakistan Army, which was committing genocide and atrocities against the people of eastern Bengal, helped create a public opinion and prompted the Indira Gandhi Government to take action. This ultimately resulted in the formation of Bangladesh. Krishna Menon, the founding father of India League, was the first High Commissioner of India to England prior to his appointment as Defence Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru cabinet.
