CHANDIGARH: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today registered three cases relating to the violence that flared up during the Jat agitation in Haryana in February this year.
Two of the cases pertain to violence and arson at the residence of Haryana finance minister Capt Abhimanyu in Rohtak on February 19. The third relates to looting of weapons from a company of the BSF and
Haryana Police personnel and an attempt to murder them by thousands of armed rioters while the security men were posted to law-and-order duties along the Delhi bypass road in Rohtak.
The CBI took over the investigation of the cases upon a request by the Haryana government.
A large number of persons were injured -- some of them grievously -- in these attacks. It was alleged that property worth crores of rupees was burnt and weapons carried by the security personnel were looted by Jat agitators who were demanding reservation in Haryana.
Rohtak was the epicentre of the agitation in which over 30 people lost their lives and property worth hundreds of crores was destroyed.
Last month, the Haryana government recommended a CBI probe into the Jat violence. The Union government was requested to probe vandalism of public property, including the residence of an inspector-general of police, besides the house of Capt Abhimanyu and other government buildings.
