CHENNAI: Marking another move to give the Aadhaar or Unique Identity card leverage, the government plans to make it mandatory in order to seek a new licence or renewal of one’s driving licence. This is in order to ensure that multiple D/Ls aren’t registered to the same person. The move may come into effect this October.

According to reports, the Union Road Transport Ministry has already started working to roll out the measure by incorporating the necessary changes. The ministry has decided to ask all the States to adopt this system to thwart attempts to beat the suspension of licences for traffic, criminal offences or for fake identity. The RTOs in different States are working on a manual system due to which they are unable to track whether applicants already have another driving licence.

This new initiative was followed by Aadhaar-based re-verification made mandatory for all existing subscribers of mobile phone services, with the government instructing telecom operators to initiate the process.
