Five-storey under-construction building collapses in Ghaziabad, one dead

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were pressed into service soon after the incident and rescue and search operations were underway, police said.

NEW DELHI: A five-storey under-construction building collapsed in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, killing at least one, officials said.

The collapse occurred on Sunday afternoon near Dasna flyover in Akash Nagar area of Ghaziabad and rescue workers were moving slowly through the debris in a search for survivors, police said.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) pressed into the service soon after the incident has so far confirmed one death and one trapped under debris rescued.

According to the Ghaziabad police, labourers rescued from under the debris have been sent to a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police of Ghaziabad to visit the site of building collapse and take immediate action for rescue, along with NDRF personnel.

He has also asked the district authorities to lodge an FIR and take action against the guilty. Building collapses in India are common during monsoon season when heavy rains weaken the foundations of badly or under-constructed buildings.

The incident came a day after an under-construction building in Chennai collapsed, killing one and injuring several. In another incident, occurred nearly a week ago, nine people were killed after a six-storey building collapsed into an adjacent building in Greater Noida's Shahberi village. Four people were arrested in connection with the incident.
