NEW DELHI: Newly-appointed interim chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) M Nageswara Rao’s journey to the top has been a roller coaster to say the least.

Rao, a 1986-batch Odisha cadre officer, was inducted into the agency in 1995 when Anil Sinha was its head. According to sources, not everyone in the agency was in favour of Rao being inducted.

Amitabh Singh Dhillon, the then head of the agency’s counter-intelligence unit, had given a report to Sinha which was not in Rao’s favour.

Dhillon’s report stated that Rao should not be inducted as there were charges of corruption levelled against him. Rao’s alleged proximity to various political parties was also a point of concern. However, Sinha and the government did not pay any heed.

The charges against Rao dated back to when he was the Chennai zone head of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
