BENGALURU: Cutting across party lines, MPs, MLAs and MLCs extended support to the state government and urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah not to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. They also urged him not to nominate any representative to the proposed Cauvery Water Management Board.
The Supreme Court has directed the state government to release Cauvery water to TN starting Saturday and to send the name of its nominee for the Cauvery Water Management Board to the Centre.
Opposition Leader in the Assembly Jagadish Shettar told reporters that they oppose the constitution of the board. JD(S) spokesperson Y S V Datta said his party urged the CM not to nominate any representative to the board. “We shall wait for the judgment. Whatever be the consequence, we will be with the CM and the state government. If needed, all 328 members, including 225 MLAs, 75 MLCs and 28 MPs, will file individual affidavits before the SC,” he said.
Congress sources said senior party leader Mallikarjuna Kharge has urged the BJP members to bring pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the issue.
