Eye makeup defines and enhances your eyes. While mascara and eyeliner can create different looks, from subtle to striking, they can also make you sick. Yes, you have heard it right. Eye makeup can be a breeding ground for bacteria. There are a few microbes such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, living around the eyes. While applying eyeliner or mascara, some of these bacteria stick to the applicator and get transferred to the makeup container.
Now, there are preservatives in the eye products meant to restrict the growth of bacteria. But in some cases, some products don’t have enough. The effect of preservatives too decline over the time and when you apply eyeliner or mascara, you end up getting bigger doses of bacteria, which can cause serious infections.
“Every year, many women end up with eye infections from cosmetics. In rare cases, women have been temporarily or permanently blinded by an eye cosmetic, according to the FDA,” warns the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York.
