The Ardhanareeswara Principle

Shri Nimishananda Guruji

Today, to become powerful and victorious, we must connect with the Divine Mother. She is the very source of power, the Mother of all the gods including Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara, combines all schools of thought such as Vaishnavism, Shaivism et cetera and gives us what we need for our progress. She creates all planes of existence, exists in every atom of creation and manifests as the entire cosmos. There are very few things in life over which we have control. All gods including the Trinity are more powerful than us and influence us in their own ways. Even a demi god like Indra controls us through our senses. The karmic demi gods Chitra and Gupta are busy recording our karma and inscribing our destiny. If we think that our mind and heart belong to us, let us also be aware that we have split them into fragments. The only way to shed our helplessness and become powerful by connecting ourselves to Devi Ma permanently.

In the Devi Mahatmyam the Devi says “I am Mula Prakriti , the presiding deity of the five elements that are the building blocks of my creation. However, in order to resonate with these, I need purusha shakti or male energy. I cannot source this from Brahma, Shiva or Vishnu. This male energy should arise from me, but should also be visible to you.” This is how Devi manifested as Ardhanarishwara— one half, the male principle and the other female. Entire creation emerged from the Ardhanarishwara principle, which is how all the corresponding energies like Brahma – Saraswati; Vishnu–Lakshmi and Shiva–Parvati came into being. A male principle automatically joins , a female principle and vice versa.

If we see ourselves, Devi gives us the male principle that can meditate and the female principle that can create. These principles are present in all, whether we are male or female. Spiritually, we call the former Sadashiva and the latter female principle Kundalini Shakti. Intoxicated with nectar, Devi sits in our Muladhara or basal chakra peacefully, while Sadashiva is in our Sahasrara or crown chakra. In this way Devi is working in all of us as Ardhanarishwara and charging our chakras. Without this, we lead a purposeless existence like rudderless ships. We are blown hither and tither by the winds of trend and fashion. We imitate others blindly without understanding them. When we activate our Kundalini Shakti, we understand life’s goal, uniting it with Sadashiva, it is the victorious day of enlightenment.

Devi is telling us how to correct all our lacunas and unite both the principles. She says  “I have given you three suktas to accomplish this. Listen to the Purusha Sukta from the Rig Veda every day which will charge the male principle in you. To adore and activate the female principle and resonate with me as Mula Prakriti, listen to the Sri Sukta, which is also a part of the Rig Veda. Then all the vortices of energy from the Muladhara to the Sahasrara become charged with divine energy. This becomes shruti or the melody of your soul. Then, listen to the Narayana Sukta from the Yajur Veda. Your whole life becomes full of energy. All your ailments vanish and you are always overflowing with energy. Listening to the Narayana Sukta also purifies and oxygenates your blood and makes your red blood corpuscles increase. It rejuvenates your body very quickly.

However, you should understand the meaning of these hymns before listening to them. Then only will  they revitalise the body, mind and spirit by nurturing and nourishing your causal, subtle and physical sheaths. When you do this consistently, it will bring victory to your body, mind, intellect and soul.
