STROKES, an exhibition of water colours by Sadhu Aliyur, an artist from Kerala is on at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.

The artist paints not just nature but captures in his paintings the interaction of humans and nature. The tiny human figures appear frolicking on the path that the artist has created with his brushstrokes, which can be associated to the Zen landscapes where man is drawn against the magnitude of the natural world.

The picturesque landscapes are recreated with the soft washes of water colour. The flow that is brought about is as soft as the feminine touch he renders to the subject. The sensuality imbued in each work gives a brief idea of the romantic exploration the artist is undertaking.

The fruit-laden coconut tree and plantation is a metaphor he picks from nature to connect to the fertility of women and her role as a creator of life forms.

Trees with cloudy backdrops, the farming lands of Kerala, the sea shore, all appear toned down with the gentleness of the water coloor medium. The challenges of water colour in maintaining the tones and the freshness of colours are all met with ease, demonstrating the experience gained over the years. The rich greens of the trees, vibrant blues of the clouds bring the picture alive.

The exhibition is on till the November 9.
