NEW DELHI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy today criticised Tamil Nadu Chief M Karunanidhi for his statement on grant of citizenship to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, alleging it was a "desperate bid" to appease the remnants of the LTTE.

In a statement, Swamy alleged that "he (Karunanidhi) is seeking to provide them (LTTE) a sanctuary in India."

Swamy said that if the Centre yields to this "illegal demand", he would certainly challenge it in courts.

Karunanidhi had on Saturday said he would persuade the Centre to grant Indian citizenship to refugees living in India.

Swamy also alleged that the Italian Government disrupted Durga puja celebrations organised by resident Bengalis in that country.
