National-level Shooter’s Husband Held for ‘Love Jihad’

Express News Service

NEW DELHI: Love Jihad accused Ranjit Kohli also known as Rakibul Hasan was arrested along with his mother from here for allegedly torturing his wife -- national-level shooter Tara Shahdeo -- to convert to Islam after marriage.

“Kohli, 30, and his mother Kaushalya Rani alias Kausar Parveen were arrested from the city’s Dwarka area by a joint team of Delhi Police Special Cell and Jharkhand Police,” said Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) S N Srivastava.

The officer said that Kohli’s mother was arrested on Wednesday morning while Kohi was nabbed late on Tuesday. They was produced before Dwarka court where the Jharkhand Police obtained a three-day transit remand of them.

Kohli said that the allegations made by his wife were false, but he accepted that he has been reading Koran since 2007. While the Jharkhand Police is yet to confirm whether Kohli is indeed Hasan, his acquaintances had accepted that he was known as Rakibul Hasan to them.

Tara, 23, and Kohli had got married on July 7 this year as per Hindu tradition. Tara said she met Kohli at the shooting range where he used to come daily to see her practice. Eventually they grew close and decided to marry. She had also alleged that Kohli did not disclose the fact that he was a Muslim.

Tara said Kohli had revealed his true identity only on the first night. In the police complaint, she alleged that her husband had assaulted her because of her refusal to convert to Islam and she had been kept under confinement for a month and tortured. She said Kohli wanted to change her name to Sara.

The Jharkhand Police stated that Kohli’s mother was a Muslim before her marriage and reconverted to her religion after the death of her husband. The investigators are also suspicious of Kohli’s rise from a small time videographer to a rich man within a span of four years.
