MUMBAI: Members of the parliamentary standing committees on empowerment of women on Thursday visited the Byculla Jail, which has been in news following the death of one its inmates, Manjula Shetye, on June 23.

The committee is studying the condition of women in detention and Byculla prison was one of the many stops in its itinerary comprising various prisons across the country.

Around 20 members of the committee visited the jail and interacted with the inmates for over three hours. Though they did not speak to the media, they are expected to take up Shetye's case in the parliament.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai crime branch, which is investigating the death of Shetye, is said to have finished recording the testimonials of all 292 inmates of the Byculla Jail. Around 60 of them reportedly said they had seen the six officials beat up Manjula.

Jailor Manisha Pokharkar and five guards - Bindu Naikodi, Wasima Sheikh, Sheetal Shegaonkar, Surekha Gulve and Arati Shingne - were arrested on July 1. They were remanded in police custody for 14 days. The investigating agency is also probing whether any other officials of the jail administration were involved in the incident.

The CCTV footage from the jail has been sent to the forensic laboratory, sources said.
