KOLKATA: Three days after the arrest of her husband and Darjeeling District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Mrinal Ghosh, Jalpaiguri DCPO Shashmita Ghosh was arrested by West Bengal Crime Investigation Department (CID) after a marathon interrogation at around 11.30 pm on Monday night over her involvement in the Jalpaiguri child trafficking case.

She was produced in the district court on Tuesday, where her custody was sought.  She was earlier suspended from duty by District Magistrate Rachna Bhagat.

CID has claimed that Shashmita knew about the child trafficking racket of prime accused Chandana Chakraborty's home but did not take any action and even tried to hush up irregularities. The agency even claimed that Shashmita's husband and Darjeeling DCPO Mrinal Ghosh used to get a commission of Rs 25,000 from Chandana for every trafficked child.

CID has claimed that the duo knew Chandana since Shashmita worked as a social worker and Mrinal as a project officer of a non-governmental organisation (NGO). The agency has claimed that Chandana helped the duo get posting as DCPOs of the two north Bengal districts.

With Shashmita's arrest, six persons have been arrested so far in connection with the case, including a doctor and a top BJP leader.
