Medicine scam: CBI raids five locations in Port Blair

There were many cases where medicines were unnecessarily procured incurring a loss to the tune of nearly Rs 85 lakh per year to the health department.

PORT BLAIR: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently conducted raids at the office of Directorate of Health Service and four other locations in connection with a multi-crore medicine purchase scam.

The raids were conducted on the basis of criminal cases lodged against the director of health services and others. Raids were conducted at the official residence of Dr Shipra Paul, director of Andaman’s health services, official residence of Dr Anwar Moosa, former chief medical officer (store), residence of one Shabbib, homeo-pharmacist attached to the directorate and two other places.

Talking to the New Indian Express, the superintendent of Andaman CBI unit, Shantanu Kar said the raids were conducted after the agency received information about branded medicines being purchased by the Directorate of Health Services instead of generic ones.

Moreover, there were many cases where medicines were unnecessarily procured incurring a loss to the tune of nearly Rs 85 lakh per year to the health department, he said.

As per sources, an FIR has been registered in this regard and the documents seized are being scrutinised.
No arrests have been made yet, added Shantanu Kar, superintendent of Andaman CBI unit.
