GUWAHATI: A MOB lynched two rape and murder accused after dragging them out of a police station in Arunachal Pradesh on Monday. The incident took place in broad daylight at Tezu in eastern Arunachal’s Lohit district. The deceased, identified as Sanjay Sobar (30) and Jagdish Lohar (26) from Assam, worked at a tea garden.After taking custody of Sobar and Lohar, the mob brought the duo to a town square where they were bludgeoned with stones and other blunt objects. The mob tried to set the bodies on fire but was stopped by a large police contingent.
The gruesome deaths brought back the memories of the lynching in 2015 in Nagaland’s commercial hub Dimapur, where a mob lynched a rape-accused after dragging him out of a central jail.In the Arunachal case, a minor girl on February 12 had gone missing from a village falling under the Wakro police outpost in the district. On Sunday morning, two of her relatives spotted the girl dead in a jungle near Namgo village.
Arunachal Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Sandip Goel told The New Indian Express that Sobar and Lohar were arrested in connection with the case. “Following their arrest, they were kept at the police station. A mob comprising several hundred people forcibly made their way into the police station and dragged the two accused out by overpowering the policemen. Later, they killed the duo,” the DGP said.
“The mob also attempted to burn the bodies but stopped by our personnel,” he added.
