NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday welcomed the agreement on the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan between Israel and Hamas, calling it a significant step toward lasting peace in the region.

Modi also praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership in navigating the agreement.

“We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump's peace plan. This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu," Modi said in a post on X.

Prime Minister expressed hope that the agreement would lead to greater stability in Gaza, highlighting the importance of humanitarian aid and the release of hostages. “We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring respite to them and pave the way for lasting peace,” he added.

India has consistently supported diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalating the conflict in the region and addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Modi’s statement aligns with India’s long-standing position of backing efforts that promote dialogue, peace, and stability in West Asia.

Modi’s remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced that both Israel and Hamas had agreed to a US- and Qatari-brokered deal. According to Trump, the agreement includes the release of hostages held by Hamas and a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops to a mutually agreed line within Gaza.

In a post on social media, Trump said, “ALL of the hostages will be released very soon” and added that “Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed-upon line.”

Hamas has confirmed its acceptance of the deal but noted it has yet to receive the final list of Palestinian prisoners to be released by Israel as part of the agreement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the agreement as “a great day for Israel” and is expected to convene his cabinet later on Thursday to formally approve the deal.

The tentative agreement marks the first tangible progress in months of conflict and could lay the foundation for a broader resolution. Global leaders have cautiously welcomed the deal, emphasising the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement to ensure long-term peace and stability in the region.
