CHANDIGARH: Two Indian nationals have been deported from Canada and five other put under the scanner following a series of violent extortion and firearms investigation.

As part of 'Project Assurance', Canadian authorities are cracking down on organized criminal networks that have been linked to multiple shootings and intimidation tactics across the Surrey city.

Punjabi-origin Indian nationals 20-year-old Prabhjot Singh and 22-year-old Lovebir Singh were arrested earlier this year. Shortly after, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) conducted immigration reviews that resulted in their immediate removal.

Surrey Police have released their photographs publicly, hoping to generate new leads regarding their associates and the broader criminal infrastructure behind the extortion cases.

In a statement Surrey Police Service (SPS) stated that is releasing a photo of a male who has been removed from Canada in the hopes of appealing to the public for information on his associates and activities while he was in Canada. This individual is suspected of being involved in the ongoing extortion crisis.

"In early 2026, Prabhjot Singh, a 20-year-old foreign national male, was suspected by SPS as being involved in extortion-related criminal activity. SPS subsequently arrested Singh and shared information about him with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). Then, as a result of their immigration investigation, Singh was removed from Canada," it read.

"SPS continues to work with our law enforcement partners with the shared objective of tackling the inter-jurisdictional and national components of extortion. We remain steadfastly committed to our policing colleagues and to our community in combatting the extortion crisis," said SPS Chief Constable Norm Lipinski.

Sources said that the investigation has also led to the arrests of three more Indian origin nationals Harjot Singh (21), Taranveer Singh (19) and Dayajeet Singh Billing (21) in connection with a February 1 shooting in the Crescent Beach area.

They were apprehended shortly after allegedly firing into a residence and attempting to flee in a rideshare vehicle and face charges of discharging a firearm and remain in custody.

Two more alleged suspects, Harshdeep Singh and Hanspreet Singh, were charged after patrol officers intercepted a vehicle and recovered a loaded handgun following gunshots near 129 Street in late January.

In September 2025, the Surrey Extortion Reward Fund of USD 250,000.00 was established to offer individuals with key information the ability to collect a reward if charges and convictions of those responsible for these crimes are secured.

The Surrey Police further added that it continues to work closely with federal immigration authorities as the investigation into these foreign nationals proceeds. They are also urging anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage of these incidents to come forward.
