CHENNAI: Chennai Slam beat Hyderabad Sky 107-93 in an important match of the third season of the UBA Pro Basketball League on Thursday to top the South Division. Both teams were playing on the back of losses in their previous matches.
Jairam starred for Chennai with 31 points. Gopal and Ram too performed well for the team, raking in 21 and 14 points.
Result: Chennai Slam 107 (Jairam 31, Gopal 21, Ram 14) bt Hyderabad 93 (Thomas 25, Mahesh 25, Mahipal 17).
Saravana bags crown
P Saravanakrishnan (8.5 pts) of Karur Vysya Bank was crowned champion of the sixth St Joseph’s International FIDE-rating chess tournament. Saravanakrishnan drew his final match with Phoobalan (7.5 pts). He received a cash prize of Rs 40,000. Prasanna (8) finished second after beating Sekar (7) and pocketed Rs 30,000. Phoobalan got the third spot and a cash award of Rs 20,000. GM Deepan Chakkravarthy was the chief guest for the event, and distributed the awards to the winners.
Inter-school chess
The ninth Modern School International Fide-rating chess championship will be conducted at the Modern Senior Secondary School from July 29 to August 3. The event has a purse of Rs 1,20,000.
No entry fee will be levied for IMs, WIMs, Fms, WFMs and players with 2300-plus rating points. Rated players will need to pay Rs 1,000, while unrated players need to shell out Rs 1,200. For further details, contact: 9840583157.
Kabaddi tournament
Twenty nine schools will take part in the first Evans MHSS (Taramani) state-level inter-school kabaddi tournament for boys. The event will be held from July 22-24 at the school’s grounds. There is no entry fee for the tournament, and it will follow a league-cum-knockout system.
Volleyball & cricket event
The 11th Ramavatar Kanodia Memorial inter-school U-17 cricket tournament and ninth Lekh Ram Gupta Memorial inter-school volleyball tournament will be organised by JHS Agarsen college. Volleyball matches will commence on August 1, while cricket matches will begin on August 3. Entries are open to all schools in and around Chennai, and will close on July 27.
