MELBOURNE: Former Australian spinner Stuart MacGill has said that he did not like skipper Steven Smith’s act of scolding Mitchell Starc publically for throwing bowl at New Zealand’s batsman Mark Craig during the first Test win at the Gabba.
The incident happened when New Zealand were left with only one wicket and Starc impetuously threw the ball in Craig's direction.
MacGill said that although Starc should not have thrown the ball, anger is a part of a sport, news.com.au reported.
MacGill, however, said that nothing should be done outside the rule, adding that Starc should wait for the next ball to get the wicket.
Smith had earlier expressed his views on the incident, saying that it was pretty disappointing and he is going to have a word with Starc.
He said that he hopes the paceman won’t repeat it again and added that he could have let the frustration out in other ways.
Following the incident, Starc was handed a fine of 5500 dollars (half of his match-fee) by match referee Roshan Mahanama for violating the ICC's code of conduct, which related to "throwing a ball at or near a player in an "inappropriate and/or dangerous manner" during an international match.
Australia have currently taken a 1-0 lead in the series following their 208-run win over New Zealand in the first Test of the three match series.
The two sides will now play their second Test at Perth on November 13 followed by first day-night Test from November 27 at Adelaide.
