HYDERABAD: Former Director-General of Police M Mahender Reddy (80) passed away in a corporate hospital in the city due to illness.

An IPS officer of 1953 batch, Mahender Reddy held various positions in the the Centre and also in the State.

“Known for his honesty and integrity, he investigated several important cases during his stints in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), an official release said. Mahender Reddy’s tenure as the DGP during was 1984-1986 when the State was passing through the crucial stage of transition of power from Chief Minister Late N T Rama Rao to Nadendla Bhaskara Rao.

Mahender Reddy was a recipient of the Indian Police Medal for meritorious service and the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service.

Post retirement, he was the only police officer to have been elected as the president of the Secunderabad Club. Family sources said the last rites of Mahender Reddy would be performed tomorrow at the Punjagutta crematorium.
