NEW DELHI: Cutting across party lines, members of the Rajya Sabha expressed anguish over the destruction of statues of Telugu luminaries on the Tank Bund in Hyderabad during the Million March on Thursday. Raising the issue during the zero hour, M Venkaiah Naidu of the BJP said that 17 statues of Telugu icons were destroyed and thrown into Hussain Sagar.

He reminded that the late chief minister NT Rama Rao had erected the statues of great heroes of Andhra Pradesh on the Tank Bund.

“It was an insult to our heritage.

This was a sad day for democracy and i t has brought a bad name for the people of Andhra Pradesh,” Venkaiah Naidu said.

Describing it as an unfortunate incident, MV Mysoora Reddy of the TDP, wanted the government to book and punish the culprits. D Raja termed it as a kind of assault on the great culture of Telugu people. However, he opined that the government cannot remain silent on the issue of Telangana. N Janardhan Reddy of the Congress said that it is for the government to take firm action against the people who were responsible for the incident.
