KAKINADA: In a shocking incident, the principal of a school for visually challenged here has viciously beat up four students for reportedly being mischievous and not studying well. The principal of the Green Field Residential School is himself a blind person.

The incident, which occurred on July 18, came to light only on Monday when the video footage of the beating was released to the media by a person who had managed to record the grim episode. The footage was aired by various TV news channels, triggering widespread outrage.

Enraged parents and members of student associations raided the school at Achhampeta Junction and thrashed school correspondent K Venkateswara Rao and principal T Srinivasa Rao. Both of them were subsequently arrested.

What has enraged the public was the fact that the principal refused to stop beating the blind children despite repeated pleas from them.

The police intervened and found that the injured students P Sai (9), Ch Iswar (12), P Surendra (12) and K Johnson (11) were not provided any medical aid, but left to suffer with severe pain in the hostel. The police shifted them to the Government General Hospital.

TDP leader B Satyanarayana is the chairman of the school.

Kakinada rural inspector Pallapu Raju said the correspondent and the principal were arrested and a case was registered against them.
