Visvesvaraya’s Services to Vizag Port Recalled

VISAKHAPATNAM: The 47th Engineers Day was celebrated in Visakhapatnam Port Trust on Tuesday. The day was celebrated to remember Bharat Ratna Sri Mookshagundam Visvesvaraya on his 154th birth anniversary. On the occasion, VPT chairman MT Krishna Babu spoke on Visvesvaraya and his contribution to the nation. He recalled Visvesvaraya’s   contributions to Hyderabad and solving the water-logging and drainage problems. The chairman advised the port engineers to rededicate and update themselves on engineering knowledge on the world class techniques and take pride in being an engineer by taking Visvesvaraya as a role model.

VPT chief engineer K Ramachandra Rao, who presided, explained the contribution Visvesvaraya made to Visakhapatnam port when there was no advanced technology available to construct breakwater. Visvesvaraya suggested sinking two ships to act as breakwaters to arrest the littoral drift problem to the inner harbour. Chief mechanical engineer Satish Honnakkattee and traffic manager Soundara Rajan spoke.
