TIRUPATI: Congress candidate R Sridevi, along with her followers, staged a dharna at the RDO’s office here on Saturday, reiterating her allegation that the TDP committed irregularities in the bypoll held for Tirupati Assembly constituency, held on Friday. Raising slogans against the government for denting the spirit of democracy by resorting to malpractices in the byelection, the protesters raised slogans seeking a re-election.

They alleged that officials remained mute spectators and succumbed to pressure from the government.

TDP leaders brought people from different parts of the district and rigged the poll, she said and wanted the officials to order re-polling.

Meanwhile, another candidate N Subramanyam Achari, who contested the byelection on behalf of the Akhil Bharatiya Jana Sangh (ABJS) party, also demanded that the authorities cancel the byelection.

In a letter to the Governor, district collector and election officer, and Tirupati Urban SP, he alleged that the officials danced to the tunes of ruling party leaders.
