SRIKAKULAM: The ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes has kept the children of a labourer from performing his last rites. After waiting for hours, only to know that the children couldn’t reach home due to lack of valid currency, their mother, with a heavy heart, had to perform the rites.

According to source, Kokkari Karuvulu (55), a resident of Tekkali, died on Wednesday night at his house. His son Appalaswamy and his two daughters migrated to Hyderabad in search of livelihood. Karuvulu’s wife Narayanamma communicated the message of their father’s death to the children in Hyderabad. Being labourers, the three children _ Appalaswamy, Uma and Saraswathi _ had no Rs 100 notes as the high value currency notes were demonetised. They could not come to Tekkali for performing the last rites and instead asked their mother to perform them.

Narayanmma, meanwhile, carried the body to the cremation ground and performed the rites and lit the funeral pyre on Thursday morning.
