Andhra reports second swine flu death, woman dies in Vishakapatnam hospital

While hospitals have received 14 suspected swine flu cases in Vizag, the collected samples have been sent to Hyderabad for testing and reports are awaited.

VISAKHAPATNAM: In the second swine flu death in Andhra Pradesh in the last one month, a 26-year-old woman, who was undergoing treatment after being tested positive, died at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam on Saturday morning.

Confirming that it was a swine flu death, district medical and health officer J Sarojini said that the woman hails from Purushotampuram village in Pendurthi mandal. She was admitted to the hospital on January 7. “Having tested positive, the woman had been put on ventilator support for the past few days. She died on Saturday morning,” the DM&HO said.

Chittoor district has reported the first swine flu death this year. Sources from Health Department said that the woman had been to Tirupati a few weeks ago and after her return, she developed swine flu symptoms. However, the DM&HO dubbed it as speculations and said that she had gone to Tirupati around one and a half months ago and there was no such report of the victims developing the symptoms after her return.

Meanwhile, hospitals in the Vizag city are receiving suspected swine flu cases on a daily basis. Sources said 14 such cases have been reported so far in Vizag hospitals. The samples collected from the patients have been sent to Hyderabad for testing .

Visakhapatnam authorities have set up 11 screening centres for swine flu in the district, apart from isolation wards at KGH for female and children and at the Government Hospital for chest and communicable diseases.
