TIRUPATI: At last, Sri Padmavathi Medical College (SPMC)  for Women managed by Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) in Tirupati got its own permanent buildings. Since it commenced its operation, the college has been waiting for its own building and had occupied a building belonging to Institute for Obstetrics. With pressure mounting on it to vacate the building, it was in a dilemma.

Now, SVIMS management has heaved a sigh of relief with AP Medical and Health Infrastructure Development Department, which has been executing the project, handing over of the documents pertaining to the building to the college management. The college will be shifted to its new premises shortly.

The permanent building of SPMC is a seven-storied building and has a capacity of 650 beds. It even has a separate hall for attendants of the patients, washrooms and waiting halls. On Wednesday, SVIMS director T S Ravi Kumar along with a team of doctors and faculty members form SPMC visited the place.

Though the lower three floors of the building are ready, the upper four floors needs to have electrical and other jobs left.  “We have handed over the building and the lower three floors are ready for occupancy. In a month, the remaining floors will be formally handed over,” Medical and Health Infrastructure Development executive engineer Nagesh told Express.

The building was constructed at a cost of `101.5 crore.
Any delay in getting its own building would have proved costly for SPMC as Medical Council of India has made it clear that any clearance and permissions on its part will only be given when the college has its own building with necessary infrastructure. It took nearly two years for it to get constructed.
