Andhra Pradesh cop injured in stand-off with red sanders smugglers

TIRUPATI: A constable belonging to the Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSATF) was injured in an attack by red sanders smugglers in the Nagapatla reserve forest near Rangampeta in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh in the wee hours of Saturday. The task force personnel were forced to fire two rounds to bring the situation under control.

A 10-member team of RSATF entered the Nagapatla reserve forest entered near Rangampeta on Friday night as part of their regular patrol. After combing the forest for about 3 km, they were returning to Rangampeta when they spotted the smugglers and woodcutters. The task force personnel warned the smugglers to surrender but the latter started pelting stones.

A constable Lakshminarayana was injured in the stone pelting. However, the task force personnel fired two rounds to deter the smugglers. They managed to nab two woodcutters and seized 24 logs of red sanders from the spot. The condition of the injured constable is said to be stable.
