TIRUPATI: The new headquarters of National Cadet Corps (NCC) Directorate will come up in Velagapudi in the capital region Amaravati soon, said Air Commodore NN Reddy, Deputy Director General, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The Deputy Director General, along with NCC Group Commander Col KV Vithal, inspected the headquarters of NCC Group, Tirupati, on Friday. He also inspected the CSD canteen in Tirupati.

Speaking on the occasion, Reddy said that the NCC Directorate had urged the AP government to allot 10 acres of land in Velagapudi for the construction of its headquarters. “We have identified 15 places in AP and 10 places in Telangana for setting up of permanent NCC camps, which requires 5 to 6 acres of land. Proposals will be submitted soon to the State governments of AP and Telangana seeking allotment of land.

We are planning to build multi-storey complexes with all modern amenities, including firing ranges and other infrastructure. NCC is also planning to raise a new battalion in Anantapur with a strength of 3,000 cadets. It has also plans to convert all minor units into major units, Reddy said. The NCC Directorate of AP and TS has been providing training to 1.18 lakhs cadets. Of the total, 68,000 cadets are in AP and 50,000 in Telangana.

Speaking on the lack of proper infrastructure, he said of the total 67 NCC units in the two States, nearly 60 units are housed in rented accommodation. Admitting the delay in issuing NCC ‘C’ certificates to the cadets, he said that steps are being taken to speed up the process. Uniform will be distributed to 50 per cent of the cadets in the two States by October. Stitching costs need to be borne by the cadets initially, which will be reimbursed later, he added.
