VISAKHAPATNAM: Customs sleuths detained three passengers who arrived at Visakhapatnam Airport from Kuala Lumpur by AirAsia flight (AK-83) on Saturday night.

As their behaviour and walking style was suspicious, they were detained and interrogated by the customs sleuths. Finally, the trio confessed that they were smuggling gold by swallowing some sachets containing yellow metal.

The detained were identified as Jahabar Sadiq Azharuddeen (34), Jahabar Sadiq Sheikh Abdullah (24) and Nayeem Mohammed Sayyad (27), all hail from Tamil Nadu.

The customs officials recovered 80 grams of gold worth Rs 2,33,600 from their rectum. According to sources, the trio came to Visakhapatnam, while smuggling gold to Chennai from Malaysia. They were sent to King George Hospital (KGH) for extraction of gold swallowed by them from their stomachs. P6

After examination, the KGH medical staff admitted them in the special ward for men. Enema was administered to the trio for extraction of gold from their stomachs through natural way. “All the three accused were brought to KGH around 5:30 pm on Sunday. Usually, people who smuggle gold by swallowing it, consume simple food for slow passage of the metal substance into their digestive system and they do not take much water.  We gave bananas, light hot water and some laxatives to extract the yellow metal from their stomachs through natural way,” Dr G Arjuna, Superintendent of KGH, told TNIE. However, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials are yet to confirm the detention of gold smugglers.
