NEW DELHI: Cutting across party lines, a large number of students and teachers, majorly women from Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University protested at various locations in the national capital on Monday condemning police action against students protesting in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) earlier.
The members of two major student wings, the Congress’s National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the RSS backed Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged protests outside the Ministry of Human Resource Development in Central Delhi over the controversy that has grabbed the eyeballs of the nation for past two days.
After the police baton-charged on varsity students, protesting over an alleged eve-teasing incident at the BHU on Saturday night, the student wing of Aam Aadmi Party- Chatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) led a solidarity march in support of BHU students at Arts Faculty in Delhi University.
Shouting slogans like “Chhatrao par kar rahe hain war, doob maro Modi sarkar” students from across Delhi coming together to vent out their anger stating that the government in Uttar Pradesh is compromising on women safety and on the other hand turning institutions into police states.
“I got to know about the protest through social media I am here to show support to the girls who were brutally beaten up on the instruction by the vice-chancellor of the university. I do not support any ideology but the safety of girls is a matter that I would stand for” said Aman Singh who is doing Ph.D in environmental studies from JNU.
Many protestors were detained while protesting, the students demanded action against the university administration and the High-level committee which was constituted by the varsity to look into the matter.
“When the girl student molested no police security and any other safety was there to help them, but when the girls were silently protesting for their rights, the so-called police brutally charged and beat them up rather than providing security. Is this the way we celebrate 70 years of Independence,? But we girls still don’t have freedom and rights” said a faculty member among the group of women who took part in the protest at Delhi University.
