Thousands witness rural sports

‘Kesard Onji Dina-2013,’ the ninth edition of the district-level traditional dirt field sports organised by the Sarvajanika Ganeshothsava Samiti at Kambla Katta near Nailapade in Alevoor, attracted thousands of sports lovers from the region.

Apart from the popular dirt track race, competitions such as Kesarugadde volleyball, thappangayi, tug-of-war and sack race also saw teams from different colleges of Udupi and DK districts participate in this monsoon event.

Udupi District Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake inaugurated the event in the presence of former Lions governor Jayakar Shetty Indrali, Sarvajanika Ganeshothsava Samiti office-bearers Suresh Kumar, Karthik Shetty, Shekhar Kalmady, Shekar Poojary, Umesh Shetty and others.

In the men’s dirt field race, Sudeep Malpe, Sandesh Nailapade and Adarsh Alevoor won the top three prizes.  In the women’s dirt field race, Sujatha, Neha and Chandrika Vasanth secured top spots. In the men’s tug-of-war, Veeranjaneya team from Polipu won the first prize and Mahila Mandali Marpalli won in the women’s event.

In the tug-of-war between college students, Vijaya College, Mulki, won the first prize and Madhava Pai Memorial College, Manipal, secured second place.
