Opposition leader in the state Assembly and former chief minister Jagadish Shettar expressed doubts over the implementation of the Rs 1 per kg rice scheme at from July 1.

He criticised the new government for not doing “proper ground work” before announcing the sop.

Participating in a debate on the thanks giving motion to the Governor’s address in the House on Thursday, the former Chief Minister felt that the Centre is not in a position to oblige the state government’s appeal to release more quantity of rice to implement the scheme.

Shettar also criticised the Chief Minister for announcing to provide rice at cheaper price even to the Above Poverty Level card holders when it is not in a position to meet its earlier promise. Criticising the state government for withholding the previous BJP government’s decision to create 43 new taluks, Shettar charged that “fearing to lose the credit for announcing new taluks to BJP, the government has decided to rescind it”.
