BAGALKOT: The operation to rescue six-year-old Thimmanna Hatti, trapped in an open borewell in Sulikeri village near Bagalkot since Sunday, entered the sixth day on Friday. But efforts by rescue workers seem to have gone in vain.

A foul smell began emanating from the borewell on Wednesday night. “It is a sign of death,” the district surgeon had said.

Meanwhile, Hanamant Hatti, Thimmanna’s father, submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner P A Meghannavar on Thursday. He appealed to save his sugarcane field by not continuing the digging. His field should be levelled so that he can continue farming.  Hanamant and his family members and villagers on Friday decided to stage a dharna if the digging does not stop. The district administration has been contacting experts to know if there is a possibility of a landslide due to the digging.

Meghannavar told reporters on Friday that two experts are expected to reach Sulikeri on Saturday. A decision will be taken only after the experts submit their report, he said.
