BELGAUM: To avoid any untoward incidents on the historical hanging bridge across the Ghataprabha river near  Gokak falls, the district administration has restricted entry to just 30 people at a time on the bridge from Sunday.

This was decided in a review meeting held on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner N Jayram instructed officials at Gokak Falls to limit the number of people on the suspension bridge.

He said as this is the peak season care should be taken to avoid accidents. He directed officials to ensure that tourists do not spend more than 10-15 minutes on the bridge.

The bridge is 14 metres above the rock bed and 210 metres long. It was built in 1907, primarily to help people from nearby villages cross the river.

Having served its life span of 100 years it had to be renovated in 2007.

A board at the entrance of the bridge states that number of people on the bridge at a time should not exceed 30.  However, the rules are ignored by tourists, especially, during monsoon when the river is in spate.  ENS
